Course Topics

Introductory Statistics - Basic (Day 1)

Design of Experiments
This class will include topics that will enable the user to learn the uses and abuses of statistics as well as learn the different methods of sampling and how to set up a proper study design before collection of data to ensure minimization of potential biases. Topics include:

Uses and Abuses of Statistics
The Nature of Data
Sampling Techniques
Types of Errors
Setting up Appropriate Studies

Summarizing Data Numerically and Graphically
The focus of this topic is to find different ways to summarize the data that is collected in the most common ways, both in a graphical sense and numerical sense, including measures of central tendency and variability. Topics include:

Frequency Tables
Measures of Center
Measures of Variability
Scatter Plots
Bar Charts
Pareto Charts
Pie Charts
Choosing the best chart and measures of center

Introductory Statistics - Intermediate (Day 2)

Probability
Probability is the key to understanding statistics. With this topic, students will gain a fundamental knowledge of the rules of probability and counting in order to understand more advanced topics in statistics. Topics that will be covered:

Basic probability rules
The additive and multiplicative rule of probability
Counting
Random variables
Expected values
Binomial Distribution

Sampling Distributions
Sampling Distributions bridge the gap between basic descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Understanding these distributions is key in order to understand and be able to conduct advanced statistical inference.

The Normal Distribution
The Central Limit Theorem
Approximating the Binomial Distribution
Point Estimation
Basics of Confidence Intervals

Introductory Statistics - Advanced (Day 3)

Fundamentals of Hypothesis Testing Part I
One of the biggest uses of statistics is to conduct inferential statistics, or drawing conclusions of a population from a sample. Setting up the test is key in drawing up relevant conclusions.

The null and alternative hypotheses
Types of errors
Hypothesis test for a mean with a large sample
Hypothesis test for a mean with a small sample
Hypothesis test for a proportion

Fundamentals of Hypothesis Testing Part II
A continuation of Part I, but emphasis will be placed on two or more samples when drawing inferences.

Hypothesis test for two means – independent samples
Hypothesis test for two means – dependent samples
Hypothesis test for two proportions
One way Analysis of Variance

Fundamentals of Hypothesis Testing Part III
A continuation of hypothesis testing, looking at inferring based on count data as well as looking at possible correlational relationship and predictive powers of statistics.

Chi-Square test of goodness of fit
Chi-Square test of independence
Correlation
Introduction to Regression
