Adobe Inc. is a computer software company leading innovation in digital media and publishing. Adobe was founded in 1982 by James Warnock and Charles Geschke in San Jose, California. The name “Adobe” comes from the name of a creek near their homes. Right from the start, Adobe set the bar for the graphic design, Web design, and digital imaging software industry. While many software manufacturers were focused on producing graphics software for specialists, Adobe revolutionized the industry by creating software that anyone could use.

The company’s rise to success began with the premier of Adobe Illustrator, vector-based graphics software geared toward consumer usability. With this program and Adobe Photoshop, raster-based software that is used to create and edit photos, art, and Web pages, the average person could do amazing things with digital images and Web design.

Despite Adob’s success early on, the increasingly competitive market forced the company to restructure in 1998. In 1999, Adobe released new versions of Photoshop, GoLive, PressReady, and ActiveShare. However, it was the introduction of Adobe InDesign that generated the largest backlog of orders in the company’s history, virtually saving the company. InDesign has since overtaken QuarkXPress as the leader in desktop publishing software.

Today, the software giant boasts a wide variety of creative imaging, video, Web design, and publishing tools. Adobe introduced the subscription-based Creative Cloud in 2011 to help make software updates easier, allow for saving to the cloud, and improve sharing capabilities. Creative Cloud includes numerous pieces of software that can be purchased individually or in bundles, including Acrobat, After Effects, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, InCopy, InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro.
