Understanding the Tools of Photoshop

Posted on 06/17/2024 by Niko Venev

Those new to image editing are often astounded by the number and complexity of Photoshop's tools and effects. While it's true that understanding Photoshop's tools and effects will usually require a deep dive into the program with a live instructor, knowing basic information about them, including what they do to an image and how to access them, can start you on your journey to becoming a respected professional.

In essence, Photoshop's effects allow you to easily transform the appearance of your images, often by simply selecting your preferred tool from a list. When individuals speak about adding effects to an image in Photoshop, they can be referring to the application of an effect to an entire image, attaching graphics, or typing text onto a photo.

While it's possible to transform entire images with effects, Photoshop gives users the ability to focus on specific areas of their images as well. Those who are interested in applying effects in this way may find themselves working with frames, textures, and layers. Users can combine multiple effects to achieve truly unique results.

Where to Find Photoshop Tools and How to Use Them

Generally, Photoshop's tools can be found on the Tools panel to the left of the main workspace area. However, more tools can often be accessed underneath the main tools. These are accessible by clicking on a triangle found on the lower right area of the main tool's icon. Hidden tools like these are grouped together in terms of similarity.

Adobe recognizes that its myriad tools can be overwhelming for novices to grasp and memorize. That's why it's added the Rich Tooltips feature to its software to bolster understanding of the tools of Photoshop. Rich Tooltips provide a convenient way to learn about tools and include summaries and short videos. Accessing Rich Tooltips can give users both basic and advanced information on how to use Photoshop tools. Should you find that Rich Tooltips don't seem to display within your program, select "Tools" under "Preferences" and choose "Show Rich Tooltips."

Choose the Right Photoshop Effects for Your Project

Users are spoiled for choice when it comes to Photoshop tools and effects, but this can make it harder to decide which are the appropriate ones for your projects. The best tools to use will vary depending on your task. Wedding photographers, for example, may rely on different effects than Web designers. While wedding photographers may appreciate effects like Gaussian blur to draw attention to a subject or color balancing to adjust hues within a photograph, Web designers may find that tools like motion blur and gradient overlay add dynamism to images or can capture the attention of website visitors. Since each professional and their respective projects can necessitate the use of different effects, it can be prudent to learn about Photoshop's various effects and determine which ones are most relevant to your work.
