Which Salesforce Course Is Best for Beginners?

Posted on 12/06/2022 by Niko Venev

The sheer number of available Salesforce certifications can be overwhelming to those who are considering earning their first credential. Choosing an appropriate Salesforce training class and certification to pursue, however, can be a fairly straightforward process once your professional goals, skills, and interests are considered.

While the best Salesforce course for you will depend on your professional interests and plans, it can be prudent for beginners to target a certification that Salesforce has designated as "entry-level." Salesforce credentials that are categorized as having no prerequisites, such as certain developer roles, can also be viable, but students may have to verify that the certifications are in a professional sphere that appeals to them. Since the responsibilities of some Salesforce roles can vary across companies, employees would do well to ensure that the credential that they choose to pursue aligns with the tasks that they want to perform within a particular organization. In many cases, Salesforce beginners sign up for Salesforce Administrator classes, as they provide the knowledge necessary to obtain more advanced certifications.

Salesforce Administrators

As the most basic of credentials, Salesforce Administrator is the go-to certification for those who are new to the software. Since it requires the least amount of specialized knowledge to earn out of all of the credentials available and also acts as a prerequisite for others, Salesforce novices often find it to be the most useful of initial certifications to obtain. While a Salesforce Administrator can be assigned several different duties, those who want to receive this certification will have to learn to handle a number of basic tasks through a training course, including:

  • Maintaining and enhancing the platform
  • Managing user roles, permissions, and profiles
  • Making configuration changes for efficiency
  • Supporting technical users of Salesforce, such as a Sales Cloud Consultant
  • Running bug fixes and backups
  • Creating reports

In some cases, pursuing a specialized role, like Service Cloud Consultant, can be appropriate for those who want to work with clients.

Service Cloud Consultants

Despite the fact that it's not designated as an advanced certification, those who aim to hold a Service Cloud Consultant certification should have the training and professional experience of a Salesforce Administrator. While administrators work behind the scenes, Service Cloud Consultants can interact with clients. This role is for employees who work within the cloud to provide instant solutions for both business and customer issues. As a Service Cloud Consultant, you may:

  • Identify solutions that can be tracked through metrics
  • Build, maintain, and scale dynamic solutions, such as knowledge bases
  • Configure the service cloud of Salesforce
  • Improve efficiency by streamlining workflows and automating processes
  • Provide support to customer service agents
  • Work to encourage customer retention

Service Cloud Consultant is typically designated as a mid-level certification, but some may consider it to be a beginner credential if the employee hasn't yet worked in a customer-facing role while using Salesforce.

Exceptions to the Rules

Although many corporate employers believe that an admin certification is a basic qualification to understand and work with Salesforce, there are exceptions to this rule. For example, while developers are typically considered to have an advanced role within Salesforce, some individuals who want to eventually pursue a senior developer role may find it more convenient to earn a Platform Developer I certification before an admin credential. Other entry-level roles or specialized credentials, such as Platform App Builder or Marketing Cloud Administrator certification, can also technically be pursued without a general admin credential as a foundation. Any role that is categorized as having no prerequisites can be a viable starting point for a Salesforce career, but it's generally recommended that beginners undergo Administrator training before pursuing other credentials.
